Welcome to Jewish Berlin

Jewish Berlin – Jews in Berlin – Jewish life in Berlin: Many articles and have been written during the recent years in newspapers all over the world. Today Berlin’s Jewish community has become the fastest growing in the world due to Russian Jewish immigration.

Jewish life developped from 1671 on steadily. In the last third of the ninteteenth century it began to flourish. A specific Berlin-Jewish culture emerged and Jews were an integral part of Berlin’s society. Berlin as a metropolis between the East and the West attracted artists, writers, scholars, scientists, political activists ...

Before the Nazis came to power, the Berlin Jewish community had 160.000 members (1/3 of all Jews in the German Reich). The pogrom that took place on November 9, 1938 (Kristallnacht) represents a rupture.

About 8000 Jews of Berlin had survived: In hiding, in mixed marriages, in concentration camps.  More than 56,000 Jewish Berliners had been murdered.  Jewish Community became reconstituted – today about 11,200 members (June 2006). But many Jews living here are not affiliated.
